Saturday, September 16th, twenty-seven chess players, grades K-12, competed in the Third Annual Orange County Orange County Students Participate in Chess Tournament at Hornet Sports Center

Students from Orange County, Culpeper County and Spotsylvania counties competed in both rated and unrated tournaments consisting of four rounds of chess.

Local first place winners are:
High School – Hailey Surles
Middle School – Tanner Hogsten
Elementary – Raechel Squire
Primary – Chloe Amos

 

Dominion Scholastic Chess sponsors multiple chess tournaments for grades K-12 including adult tournaments throughout the year in Culpeper, Orange and Spotsylvania counties. Tournaments are open to beginners and experienced players. Rated players are members of the United States Chess Federation and have ratings earned in previously played rated games Students grades K-12 and college level students have opportunities to play in local, regional, state, national and international tournaments.

This past spring 7 local players competed in the Virginia Scholastic State Championships in Virginia Beach. They were led by Tanner Hogsten, 8th grader at Prospect Heights Middle School, who was attending his third state tournament. The state championship is held the second weekend in March and is rotated throughout different regions of the state. Next years state championship is March 2-4, 2018 in Roanoke, VA.
