The OCHS Winterguard competed Saturday, April 7th in the Atlantic Indoor Association North Guard Championship at Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, VA..
In their first competition of the season at Hanover High School in January, the Winterguard placed 1st with a score of 59.13 out of four guard units in the Colorguard Scholastic Regional A2 class. This class includes guards that are in their beginning years either in terms of experience of the participants or instructors. The program , Moth’s Wings, was choreographed by Stephanie Walters, winterguard instructor from John Champe High School. Ms. Walters traveled to Orange several times during the season to work with the guard and attended their competitions to assist them. Mr. Doss, drumline director, also worked with the guard on technique and traveled with them to competition. The OCHS Winterguard was also led by OCHS senior Cassie Rathburn
Due to their success in the first competition, the Atlantic Indoor Association moved them up to the Colorguard Scholastic Regional A1 class. This class is for a more advanced performer, instructor and choreographer. These performers work closely on uniformity in their performance. As a CSRA1 competitor, OCHS improved their score from 73.9 to 76.65. During regular season competition, they placed in the top 3 in all competitions which usually included from five to nine units of competition.
At the North Guard Championship, 11 units were in competition. OCHS earned their highest score of the season, 77.895, earning a 5th place finish.
Congratulations to the OCHS Winterguard on their promotion from CSRA2 to CSRA1 and their consistent finish throughout the season. These performers worked diligently all season and that showed in their improvement in their score.
