Wednesday, January 16th - 7th grade Bear Church Rock Shenandoah National Park Challenging hike from the Piedmont side of the park up Jones Mountain to a beautiful overlook. Bring warm layered clothing, hat, gloves, fleece, winter jacket, a BIG bag lunch and two liters of water.
Leave PHMS at 8:30AM and return at 6:30PM.
Friday, January 25 8th grade History Hike, Rappahannock River Fredericksburg Va. Pre Columbian History through present day. Ancient fish weirs to modern conservation easements, lots of fun and interesting history on this beautiful day trip. Return time 5:30 PM
Fundraisers!!!!
Tuesday, January 29 thru Tuesday, February 12 - Discoverys Annual Cookie Dough Fundraiser. We did very well with this last year - customers liked the product it makes great cookies! We will take orders during this two week period and the product will be delivered at the beginning of March.
Friday, February 8 Discovery Valentines Dance 7th graders will put on the dance, decorate and help run concessions. The dance will be after school from 3:30 6:00. We need parents to oversee concessions and help as chaperones. Please contact Mr. Coleman if you are able to help.
8th grade Rewards Ski Trip students who have participated in Discovery outings and are doing well in core studies will be invited. Invitations will go home mid January, and must be returned that week.
February, 13, 14, 15, Skiing Timberline Resort West Va. This is a new trip for our 8th grade calendar. We leave after school on Wednesday the 13th and return on the 15th at roughly 11:00 PM. We need a limited number of adults for help if you would like to come and help please let us know as soon as possible as space is limited. We do ask adults to pay for their ticket. The cost for this trip is $120.00 this covers five meals, lodging, rental and lift tickets and ski lessons for everyone. If students need scholarships, Discovery will cover all costs. If parents would like to help with costs we appreciate it, but it is not a requirement. Make Checks to PHMS Discovery. This is a skiing trip no snow boarding. (Cont. next page)

Bring a huge bag dinner for the trip out, plenty of water (a water container to keep for the trip) and $10.00 for dinner stop on the ride home. Please caution your child not to spend this money until dinner for the return ride. Please, no more than $10.00. Bring gloves, three pair socks, nylon ski pants or swishy pants, thermal underwear, hats, three changes of undergarments, towel, personal hygiene stuff, one pair of jeans and a sweat shirt, one fleece and one very warm jacket. One sleeping bag (we have these as necessary).
February 22 7th grade skiing Massanutten. No snow boarding is allowed. The cost is $40.00. Scholarships are available students need only ask and Discovery will cover the cost. If parents are comfortable with the cost we appreciate the help. Make checks payable to PHMS Discovery Program.
We will leave school at 1:30 PM and return at 12:00 Midnight. We will call if we are later. Bring a huge bag dinner with water or sport drink. No sodas are allowed. Students may bring $5.00 for a snack, but Please, no more than $5.00.
Students will need gloves, warm socks, thermal underwear, hats and nylon pants (swishy pants or ski pants) Jeans are not allowed, as they will absorb water and cause hypothermia! One fleece and one very warm jacket.
