Local Chess Players Participate in Virginia Scholastic State Chess Championship

The 2017 Virginia Scholastic and College State Chess Championship will be held in Virginia Beach, Virginia on March 10-12th. The scholastic tournament rotates annually among different regions of Virginia. The tournament is open to scholastic chess players grades K-12 plus college students. Players are required to be members of the US Chess Federation and students in the state of Virginia.

This year Orange will be represented by seven players; five players in the K-5 section and 2 players in K-8 section. Each player will play six rounds Saturday and Sunday. Orange participants this year are fifth graders Eric Floyd and Dylan Mauller and fourth grader Chandler Poppe, from Gordon-Barbour Elementary: Steven Rapids, fifth grade, from Lightfoot Elementary; Jackson Hamilton, fifth grade, Orange Elementary; and Ryan Cook, eighth grade at Prospect Heights Middle will be attending their first state championships. Tanner Hogsten, sixth grader from PHMS will be attending his 3rd state tournament.
