Lightfoot Elementary History

Lightfoot Elementary School was named for Mrs. Isabella Lightfoot, a black teacher in Orange County many years ago. Her first classes consisted wholly of black children and were held in a barn in Tatum, near the present school on Route 522. Later, a new building called Rosenthal School was built; its name was later changed to Bethel Elementary School. Just before the present school building was finished, Bethel School burned down. Because of this tragedy, the teachers and students were relocated into the present structure prior to its completion; this was in 1953, ten years after Mrs. Lightfoot had died. The School Board, the superintendent, and the community named the school for Mrs. Lightfoot to honor an individual who had been so dedicated to education in the community.
