The HOWARD BERCKMAN STORY!

Please stop by the PHMS Goal Rush Library and see the Howard Berckman Reading Center.   This reading center is dedicated to Howard because of his love of reading and his desire to share that love by working in the LMC as a long-term volunteer.

Howard started working with the Orange County School System the summer of 1991.  It was that summer he

noticed the Librarian working long hours (6:00 a.m.—6p.m.) at Lightfoot Elementary School and offered to help.  He has volunteered with many agencies over the years.  He currently volunteers for the Orange Food Pantry and Friends of the Library, as well as our Goal Rush Library at PHMS.

Howard single-handedly packed all the library’s 15, 319 books and re-shelved most of the books (working as late as 9:30 one evening) in the new library!  Wow!  Thank you Howard!  That was 2003/04! Howard is still working with us today shelving, processing, and cataloging books.

Howard’s tireless work ethic makes it possible for the librarian to leave normal hours most days.  “He even does cataloging and book covering.  He has given my life back to me.” says Mrs. Olen, the PHMS Librarian.
