The village of
Unionville pre-dates the Civil War, at which time it consisted of
just several houses and a church. The village was named for a Union
Church which stood near the present community. One of the area's
earliest school buildings still stands today and is used as a personal
dwelling. Sometime around 1900, a wooden structure was erected on
Route 20 just north of the present school. This building served as
an elementary school and high school for many years.
About 1950, the
high schools of the county were consolidated in the town of Orange,
while the elementary school remained in Unionville. The present school
was constructed in 1958 to house grades one through seven; however,
grades six and seven were relocated following the institution of
an intermediate school in the county. Two years later, due to integration,
increased enrollment, and other changes in the Orange County School
System, grades four and five were moved to Lightfoot Elementary,
leaving Unionville Elementary with only the primary grades one through
three. In 1974-75 , the kindergarten program was initiated. Four
years later an annex building was constructed to house the kindergarten
program.
