Sometimes a book is like a window that opens a whole new world. This was true for the Locust Grove Middle School sixth graders after reading, A Long Walk to Water. The book tells the story of two children growing up in war-torn Sudan. Sanwa is forced to leave his village and walk to Ethiopia and Nya must spend her days walking back and forth to a pond carrying water for her family. The plight of these two children in another country so different from ours inspired LGMS students to take action–to donate funds for building a new well for the residents of a small village in Sudan. LGMS sixth graders looked through the window frame and gained a new human perspective.
