Orange County Public Schools' mission is to provide the highest quality education for all students in a safe and caring environment. 

Our school safety staff are responsible for ensuring:

  • Physical Security by implementing measures to protect school buildings and ground, such as security cameras, access control systems, and visitor management procedures.
     
  • Emergency Preparedness by developing and practicing emergency plans for various scenarios, such as fires, lockdowns, and natural disasters.
  • Student Safety by addressing issues such as bullying, harassment, and violence prevention.
     
  • Collaboration with Law Enforcement by working closely with local police and other agencies to ensure coordinated response to safety concerns.

     

Below is information about the safety drills conducted throughout the school year, our emergency response procedures, and how and when families will be notified during emergencies. We encourage parents and guardians to review this information so they know what to expect and how we work together to keep our school community safe.

SchoolMessenger uses the contact information on file in PowerSchool. If you are not receiving notifications or your contact information has changed, please contact your child's school to verify and update your information.

Emergency Protocols & Notifications

OCPS has adopted The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP). Students and staff will be training, practicing, and drilling the protocol.
 
The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is based on an all-hazards approach as opposed to individual scenarios. Like the Incident Command System (ICS), SRP utilizes clear common language while allowing for flexibility in protocol.
 
The premise is simple - there are five specific actions that can be performed during an incident. When communicating these, the action is labeled with a “Term of Art” and is then followed by a “Directive.” Execution of the action is performed by active participants, including students, staff, teachers and first responders. The SRP is based on the following actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.

The OC-Safe Reporting Platform is now available for members of the OCPS community to anonymously report or notify school officials of situations that may pose a danger or threat.  

A link to the OC-Safe Anonymous Tipline has been added to our division and school websites as one of our Call-to-Action Buttons, and it can be found in the same location on each of our websites (see below).   

Our goal is to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff members.

Safety Drills

In order to ensure the safety of our students and staff, safety drills are conducted throughout the year.  School Crisis, Emergency Management Plans and Medical Emergency Response Plans for each school have also been developed and are reviewed and updated each year.

School-Law Enforcement Partnership (SLEP)

The Code of Virginia, § 22.1-280.2:3, requires that School Boards in each division in which the local law-enforcement agency employs school resource officers enter into a memorandum of understanding with such local law-enforcement agency that sets forth the powers and duties of such school resource officers.
